Defining a Woman :: What makes a woman a ‘woman’? Is it because she is female? Or is there more to it than a mere biological difference? When marketing to women, what are the things that she wants that makes her different from men?

The questions could go on and on, but the truth is, ‘woman’ is an ever-changing entity, with needs and desires that alter and change with the generations. Although this is becoming more prevalent in men, for the past fifty years, women all over the world have been changing how they perceive the world. In the 1950’s, women wanted security. In the 1960’s, women wanted independence. In the 70’s, it was sexual freedom. By the time the 80’s and 90’s came around, they wanted career equality and self-satisfaction.

For men, their needs and wants for most of the last fifty years have been solid and staid. It is only in the last 10 years, that men have had to alter their thinking to allow themselves to encompass more of their own personalities. Only now are men learning to express themselves; how to cry, how to admit inner feelings and become more complex than ever before. Marketing to men is just beginning to acknowledge these changes.

But marketing for women has required evolving at the same rate as women. Of course, marketing sometimes got it wrong and ended up trying to sell an obsolete product. And in general, people who want to target women find it frustrating that just when they have pigeon-holed women into one category, they have moved a little to the left. Or the right. And sometimes, they haven’t moved at all.

The 1950’s featured a woman with short hair, wearing ‘frock’s’ and doting on her husband. She was a family woman, and specialised in taking care of her children and partner. She felt safe and secure and she remained married till her death. Her pursuits included cooking and cleaning and she was particularly interested in washing powders, recipes and ovens. Television led the way for creating the female stereotype.

Nowadays, a woman is more than a 1950’s woman could even contemplate. They have careers, and families, and believe in themselves in a way that previous female stereotypes have never thought possible. Women KNOW they can achieve anything, do anything, be anything, and at any time. Yet as a paradox to this, women are more self-conscious, more insecure than ever before. This enigma is the result of the ever-changing process of finding her own identity. As women have allowed themselves the right to express themselves in their own unique way, more and more insecurities have been raised within the female psyche.

So how do you market to a woman of today? Firstly, think about women you know. Most of them are intelligent, sassy and unique individuals. They have their own quirks and idiosyncrasies. They like some of the things that men enjoy, and some things that are purely enjoyed by women. And they like to flit between both of those genres.

Give it a Feeling’
For websites to be successful, especially in the porn genre, it will be necessary to provide more than just a pack of pretty photographs of men displayed on a page. Just as men have different tastes, so do women. So offer photographs of many different types of men, in and out of clothes. Generally, women don’t become aroused easily, by the mere photo of a man. They require more than visual stimulation and want to create a situation where their imagination can soar. A slick package may suit the high-powered person, but when catering especially for women, give your site feeling. Create a mood, and adjust your tone and tempo to suit a less ‘driven’ scenario.

Choose your content
Most people seem to think that if they upload some pictures of naked men, they have a site for women. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Women enjoy seeing photographs of men clothed, drinking wine, living life, and looking particularly seductive. He doesn’t need to be naked to do that. A woman can create a scene for him within her own mind. Hardcore photographs are only used as a final push for women, not as the sole core of a site. Aim for sensuality not sexuality.

Male Pictures
Look at the photos and see where a man’s eyes are. The eyes are often the first thing a woman will focus on. Is the photograph meant to be catering toward a gay market or has it been created with women in mind? Gay photographs are rarely suitable for female porn sites, however the lack of women-orientated content makes this difficult. Try to avoid photographs that focus on the backside or appear gay.

Couple Photos
For couple photos, do not use pictures that focus on the woman looking bored. Women like to either be voyeurs or to put themselves in that same situation as the photograph. Most women don’t want to see repeated scenes of a woman being ejaculated on. Women want a man to orgasm inside her, not have physical proof that he knows how to aim. The expression on a man’s face is very important, to show that he has lost control. For women in the photograph, choose pictures that show her abandoned and lustful. Avoid big hair and fake-looking women. These are a turn-off for women.

Extra Content
Think about what else you will add to your site apart from photographs. Erotic stories are good because they set the mood and have proven to be a winner with women. Make sure your fiction is high quality and is written for women. It will focus more on feelings and thoughts than action. If you want to expand on this theme, use photographs to illustrate your story, showing couples imitating art.

Allow romance and foreplay to be part of your site. Add video and audio if possible, to allow a woman to be swept into the feeling you have created. Include informative articles on fantasies, sex toys, foreplay and other relevant topics. Don’t focus on body image because this is one area where women are most insecure. Ensure that your site is not degrading to women or talking down to them. If necessary, ask another woman to review your site.

Why Women want it.
Women enjoy looking at a penis. The Internet has proven that. Soft or hard, there is no reason why women can’t enjoy porn. Sensual porn is appealing because it offers both the hardcore passion as well as the softcore romance. These issues are just as important in a woman’s everyday life as it is in her online existence.

Fantasies are just as important to women as they are to men. Allow women to be empowered with fantasy and give women the credit they deserve. Avoid scenarios that a 1950s women would enjoy and focus more on the modern woman.

As women have evolved and continue to evolve, so must the way you market to women. Women are more adaptable to change because it has become part of their lifestyle. It is important that the trends you follow allow for the continual growth of women. They aren’t stagnant two-dimensional entities. A female’s ability for inner growth and self-awareness is extraordinary.

Enjoy the uniqueness of women, and cater to their uniqueness.
